It took me about 1 minute to find this site: I would simply donate it to somebody that would see value in the collection. the thought that someone will appreciate and take care of what was important in their lives. I don't think it's really about how much money they can get vs. Many people who collect things ultimately want someone to take over their items who also has a similar interest and appreciation for the specific collectible. Have you told him this is one of your thoughts? Honestly, I really think it is a shame to hear that you are contemplating melting down your dad's collection for the few dollars it would bring in scrap metal.
